Hello all,
thanks to all who variously offered advice on links, further contacts for
obtaining geological data for Japan and offering to supply the data.
For those who are interested, the following links may be of interest.
The Energy Resources Team of the US Geological Survey has produced
an extensive product aimed at petroleum products. Thus, the available
maps are "biased" in that direction. Part of the effort includes
digital maps that can be downloaded. Please also download the
available metadata.
Overall World report produced in 2000:
World map circa 2000.
World maps available from:
Japan is included in one of several regional reports. Look for
Open File Report 97-470F:
For downloading data in an .e00 format go to:
I believe the CD-ROM version also includes shape files.

Excellent web site (in English as well) that may help is the
Geological Survey of Japan's:
http://www.aist.go.jp/GSJ/
Large quantity of digital data available, including scales you need.
On CD-ROM only doubt it will be accessible of the web. Have not
used the data but believe it is ESRI compatible (though this is not
specifically stated on the GSJ site, Steven Pollard's slightly out of
date summary of geospatial data of Japan indicates that it is in
.e00 format). Pollard's site provides a useful start for searching
GIS related material in Japan link below:

Would be interested in hearing how you get on

Hi John,
I recently attended the IAMG meeting in Cancun and listened to a talk about
the
'World Geologic Map' project by a fellow from the Japan Geological Survey.
They
have contributed to this project and so there may be data available. Here
are
some links to check out.

Dear John
I have lifted the infor below from our latest catalogue, this data which was
originally in TNTMips format and somewhat poorly attributed. While the
quoted scale of the coverage is 2 Million the scale, the data for Japan is
better than that (the Japanese did most of the work on this project). I
would say the resolution of the Japanese data would be somewhere between 1
and 1.5 Million scale (as you can see by the line density on the Japan
section of the low resolution figure below). We can supply this data in
ArcView or MapInfo format.

data?
if you didnt not hear and you are interested in getting data, please let
me know.

committee for Coastal and Offshore Geoscience Programes in East and
Southeast Asia) which are coordinated by GSJ (geological survey of
japan).
let me know if you would like to purchase them. i think they are about
7000 YEN or so each. there are about 2 - 5 cdroms. we can work out some
terms if you are interested. all of the cdroms would be new and
unopened.
i dont believe there is any way yet to get this data on the internet.
